From Designer to Accidental Sysadmin: My First Year in IT
I’ve never really done this before. Ever.
But lately I’ve had this weird mix of thoughts, and I figured… maybe it’s time to just put some of them out there.
So yeah… here’s me…
I’ve been a graphic designer for almost a decade.
Not a rockstar. Not some design influencer.
Just someone who cares about good design and getting better.
But about a year ago, I somehow also became… the sysadmin.
Not because I planned to, but because someone had to, and I said yes.
Now I’m managing networks I didn’t set up, sorting out systems I didn’t build, and learning everything on the go.
No degree. No real mentor. Just me, Google, ChatGPT, Reddit (thank you, kind strangers), and a lot of trial and error.
It’s messy.
The setup I inherited was even messier.
But I’ve learned more in this one year of fixing broken things than I ever expected.
Some days I’m designing social media posts.
Other days I’m making LAN cables or fixing DNS issues.
Somewhere in between, I’m editing travel videos for company parties.
And honestly — I don’t always know what I’m doing.
But I’m doing it anyway. And I like it.
And maybe that counts for something.
I’m not even sure why I’m posting this.
Maybe to remind myself how it started.
Maybe someone else out there is juggling weird roles too and feeling just as confused and weirdly proud.
Either way — here it is.
PS. Yeah, ChatGPT helped shape this… sure…
But come on — I’m in IT now, aren’t I?
